Bubble Painting!

Today we got to experience science and art at the same time...

We spent time learning all about bubbles, like how they are made, why they pop and what they look like in slow motion.

Here's a video of what we saw...



Then we learned how to use bubbles in art.  We added paint to the bubble mixture we had already made.  Next we used straws to blow bubbles so that we could put the paper onto the bubbles. When the bubbles popped they let prints on the paper!

Ripper Rugby!

Today we had our first ripper rugby lesson of the year! Every Wednesday from weeks 2-5 we'll be learning something new about rugby.

How to make salt crystals

What you'll need:

  • A jar
  • Water
  • About half a cup of salt
  • A spoon for stirring
  • String
  • Scissors
  • 2 toothpicks


Instructions:
  1. Fill the jar with water.
  2. Add about half a cup of salt to the water.
  3. Mix the solution together with a spoon.
  4. Cut a piece of string with scissors and tie each end to a toothpick.
  5. Place the string over the top of the jar so that the string dangles into the middle of the solution and the toothpicks hang over the edge.
  6. Don’t forget to clean up when you’ve finished.

How to make sugar crystals

What You Will Need

  • 1 cup water
  • 3 cups table sugar
  • clean glass jar
  • pencil
  • string or yarn (do not use nylon string)
  • pan for boiling water and making solution
  • spoon for stirring
  • (optional) food coloring

Instructions
  1. Tie the string to your pencil.. The string should be able to hang into your jar without touching the bottom or sides.
  2. In the pan start boiling the water. You may want to ask an adult for help or let them know you're using the stove, just in case.
  3. Stir in the sugar one spoonful at a time. You want to make sure there is lots of the solute (in this case sugar) in the solution, but not so much that it doesn't all dissolve into the solution. If you have some undissolved sugar your Rock Crystals will start building onto those molecules rather than your string.
  4. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want some color to your candy.
  5. Carefully pour the solution from the pan into your clean glass jar. Make sure it's clean, otherwise crystals will build onto those molecules on the jar and not on your string.
  6. Balance the pencil (with the string tied to it) on the lip of the jar and let the string dangle into the solution. Again, don't let the string hit the sides or bottom of the jar.
  7. Find a safe spot for your jar so it won't get knocked around or exposed to too much dust and debris.
  8. Check on your Rock Crystals the next day and notice how they're started to take form on the string.
  9. Whenever your Rock Crystals are the right size for your taste or when they stop growing go ahead and take them out of the jar and let them dry.

Patrick's Crystal Learning

Today Patrick taught some learners from Hub 9 how to make crystals. 

1. First you have to put hot water in a pot to boil. 
2. Make sure you have a pencil or a stick.
3. Tie string to the pencil or the stick.
4. Put a paper clip on the string. 
5. Put the sugar into the burning water.
6. Mix it and make sure the sugar is dissolved. 
7. Pour the sugar mixture into a the glass jar or cup. 
8. Put your pencil with the paper clip into the glass jar or cup. 
9. Leave it in a warm place and see if any crystals grow.

Collaborating to invent a brand new game

We had such a lot of fun today, collaborating together to invent a brand new sports game.
