Messed Up Sport

This is Hub 2's 2014 entry for the Manaiakalani Film Festival.

This film is about a magician who keeps changing the sport his friends are playing. The sports players start playing netball. Netball then turns into basketball. Basketball then turns into soccer and soccer turns into rugby. Finally rugby turns into handball. The magician then puts a spell on the players, making them go to sleep. They wake up very confused as they all remember playing a different sport.

The sneaky magician almost gets away with his plan until he is spotted running away.

Stonefields School's first Triathlon!

It was great to see so many learners for LH2 participating in the triathlon today. After biking, swimming and running the long course it is not surprising our learners were very tired by the end of the day!

Some learners from LH2 have been creating some art for the enchanted forest disco tomorrow night.
Their art is going to look fantastic at the disco! Keep an eye out for it!

Our first trusted learners

In Hub 2 we now have quite a group of trusted learners!

Each child has made an appointment with the teacher and explained lots of reasons why they should receive a trust licence. The teachers were really impressed with all the ideas these children shared and have been equally impressed with how they have used their extra trust so far.

Our First Week in the Pool!

Aquatic Safety

This week we were able to enjoy and explore the pool.  We also took some time to talk about pool rules to make sure we are all safe when we are in the water.

Next week we will begin learning about aquatic safety both on land and in the pool, such as what the differences are between floating with and without a life jacket, what a current feels like and what to do if we are caught in one to name a few.

Here is what some of the learners had to say about the pool:

"It was warmer than I thought it would be" - Euan

"I liked how there were things to help us float" - Flynn

"I liked the size because it wasn't to big" - Maddy

"I liked doing dolphin wiggles!" - George

Also special thanks to Liz (Maddy's mum) for her swimming cap expertise!

Painting with straws: Part 1

We have been having a go at creating abstract paintings by blowing through straws.

Here's the video on how you use this technique:

Here's a video of a straw blowing artist:

We watched these videos and had lots of time to think about and discuss this new technique. Then we had a go using water on the concrete outside:

Then we practiced this technique using paint on paper. It was more tricky than we thought!

What are we cooking today?

It certainly smells pretty yummy in the kitchens at Stonefields this morning! We have two break through groups cooking today. We have build our knowledge about the recipes and the ingredients we need. Today we are applying our understanding by cooking macaroni cheese and chocolate chip cookies. Yum! Yum!

This week for our concept "What makes a successful learner?" we had a challenge....

To collaborate to create a way of getting our toy animal across the DANGEROUS RIVER!!

We were given:
x10 sheets of paper / x1 piece of string / x1 yoghurt container / x2 straws / x8 rubber bands / x1 animal

We had only 20 minutes.  Here are some of the things we constructed...

Watch this space to see whose construction reached the other side of the river safely!
