Messed Up Sport

This is Hub 2's 2014 entry for the Manaiakalani Film Festival.

This film is about a magician who keeps changing the sport his friends are playing. The sports players start playing netball. Netball then turns into basketball. Basketball then turns into soccer and soccer turns into rugby. Finally rugby turns into handball. The magician then puts a spell on the players, making them go to sleep. They wake up very confused as they all remember playing a different sport.

The sneaky magician almost gets away with his plan until he is spotted running away.

What learner quality do I need to work on?

This term, hub 2 learners will be choosing what learner quality they think they most need to work on each week. On Friday we thought about which learner qualities we are really good at and which learner qualities we could try and use a bit more.

Jake is working on questioning this week.

Kyle is working on thinking this week.

I wonder which learner quality you are working on this week?

What's life like in Qatar?

We were so lucky today to have Jake's dad come in and talk to us about life in Qatar. He told us all about the country and how people live there, to help us with our inquiry.

Painting with straws: Part 1

We have been having a go at creating abstract paintings by blowing through straws.

Here's the video on how you use this technique:

Here's a video of a straw blowing artist:

We watched these videos and had lots of time to think about and discuss this new technique. Then we had a go using water on the concrete outside:

Then we practiced this technique using paint on paper. It was more tricky than we thought!

Describing movie characters.

We have been writing descriptions of characters. We have talked about how we can publish in the best way to suit the audience we want to read our writing. These writers have chosen to publish their writing on the blog.

Here are our success criteria. Do you have any feedback for us?

It has lots of information:
  • ·       Uses most of the senses (looks like, sounds like, feels like, smells like, does…)
  • ·       You can imagine this thing easily.

It is interesting to read – it might have lots of detail or it might be funny.
It tells a little mini story about that character.
It has all the capital letters and full stops you need.
It has to have at least one simile.
The information is grouped – what it looks like and what it does.
The  sentences start differently.

Movie Night

We had such fun at the movie night on Friday.

Here are some pictures of Hub 2 children having a great time:

Crossing the DANGEROUS RIVER...

We finally got to talk about the constructions we made!

Each group took a turn to describe their toy's construction and then attempt to cross the river.

Here are some photos of our sharing:
